New laws make it hard for smokers to have a life…

If you are a smoker (or even a vaper), you may be missing out on big parts of life soon.

Allow me to explain…

The government is working on new legislation (which will be presented to parliament in the next few weeks, and probably be bulldozed through the system) which will prohibit smoking in most places, with some restrictions even applying in your own home.

And if you thought you could switch to vaping…

Sorry, but that is going to be treated the same as cigarettes. The same restrictions and prohibitions will apply.

Here is what you need to know:Up until now, restaurants and pubs were allowed to have a smoking area limited to 25% of their surface area. That 25% os not going down to ZERO.

That’s ok, right? After all, you can still go and have a smoke outside…

Maybe not. “Some open spaces” will also be subject to smoking bans, so depending on where your favorite establishment is situated, you may not be able to smoke outside either.

That ban includes “communal spaces” like communal areas of of your apartment block, or a shared area in your sectional title complex.

This also extends to health- and rehabilitation facilities – so if you land in hospital, apparently you will not be allowed to smoke before you go home again.

  1. Buying cigarettes from vending machines will be prohibited. The reasoning is that nobody monitors those machines, so kids can use them to buy tobacco products.
  2. If you run a daycare centre from your home, you will not be allowed to smoke there.
  3. If you have a domestic worker or gardener working for you, you will not be allowed to smoke when they are there.
  4. Lastly, the law allows the minster to – at his or her discretion – ban any specific flavour of e-cigarettes (due to its popularity with under-age children). You can expect most flavours to be banned.

Note: In most cases, the prohibitions for vaping will be the same as for tobacco products.

And of course, the branded packaging must go. It will all be presented in “simple packaging with graphic warnings”.

So how will this affect you (if you smoke) or your family?

You may not want to visit your favourite restaurant again.

You may not want to attend events where you cannot smoke.

You may not want to visit your favourite pub again.

You may not want to visit the casino again (because someone else will take your machine while you go for a smoke).

You may have to go for several hours without a smoke when your domestic worker or gardener comes around.

Severe consequences are planned for those who disobey the new law – including up to three months in jail for smoking in a “closed” public space or a workplace.

In the face of all of this, you have to ask yourself…

Are you willing to live with this?

(on top of paying more “sin taxes”, which will undoubtedly increase when the finance minister’s budget comes around)
