A new anti-smoking law was tabled in parliament. Smokers and vapers will no doubt find the new rules draconic, but it seems that this is just the way that things are going to be…

The BIG issue is that smoking and vaping will be subject to the same rules and regulations.

Why?

Because vaping introduces a range of chemicals, some of which not much is known about long term effects. And because more and more children are moving towards vaping, and the government wants to discourage that.

This is what the new proposed law is about:

1. No advertising of tobacco- and vaping products.

Aside from no advertisements being allowed at all, even the packaging for the products will need to be plain. Presenting smoking and vaping as something attractive will not be allowed any more.

2. No more vending machines for tobacco- and vaping products.

And the BIG one…

3. Clear restrictions on where you may smoke or vape.

This includes the following:

a. Some public spaces will – as deemed fit by the minister – be designated as no-smoking (and as such, no-vaping) areas.

b. No smoking or vaping in the presence of learners/students in any tutoring/teaching environment.

c. No smoking or vaping in any childcare facility, even if it is a house that is being used as daycare.

d. No smoking or vaping in your car if a child or a non-smoker/non-vaper is with you.

e. No exposure of employees to – or allowing exposure to – smoking or vaping.

There are provisions in the law for hefty fines, prison sentences, and both.

For instance:

Smoking or vaping in a public place can send you to prison for up to three months.

Smoking or vaping in the presence of a child or non-smoker can send you to prison for up to six months.

Smoking or vaping in a private home which serves as a child care centre, can send you to prison for up to 5 YEARS. So if you run a day care centre from home, NOBODY in your household is allowed to smoke or vape.

Exposing your employees, and/or not allowing them to exercise their right to a smoke-/vape-free environment, can land you in prison for up to TEN YEARS.

So if you smoke or vape in your own home while your non-smoking domestic worker is working…

Do the math.

The bottom line is this:

ONE cigarette or vape can literally destroy your life.

Just imagine – you are driving in your car with your kids, and without thinking, you light up or start your vape. Out of habit.

The wrong person sees you, and you end up going to jail for six months.

By the time you get out, you have lost your car, your house, your job…

Let’s not even talk about – out of habit – accidentally lighting up while your domestic worker is working…

That could send you away for up to TEN YEARS.
